Florida man shot by his best friend

Sebring, Florida -- A Highlands County man is recovering after police say he was shot by an unlikely suspect: his pet dog.

35-year-old Gregory Dale Lanier was driving with his pet pooch on Saturday when the dog kicked a .380 pistol that was on the truck's floor.

Lanier thought the gun was unloaded, but quickly learned otherwise after hearing a "boom, saw smoke and felt a burning in his leg," Highlands Today reports.

Year in Review: Weird, weird Florida...

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- In 2012, Florida was a state where a lifeguard got
fired for saving a life, a woman got arrested for riding a manatee and a
man repeatedly used 911 as a phone sex service.

Think that's weird? It gets worse and more tragic.

Sebring, Florida -- Only in Florida, would you ever hear about a criminal investigation into citrus tree thefts from right out of the ground. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office put out the alert last week after a person was caught on camera digging up trees, stealing them from an orange grove on Memorial Drive.

Detectives say the thefts began in October and usually involve trees pulled from rows near the road.
