Highlands County, FL-- The Florida Department of Transportation sent out the District Wide RoadWatch Report for the week of January 27. 

According to the report, Highlands County residents should consider the following projects while driving next week:

Highlands Co., FL-- The Florida Department of Transportation released their Road Watch Report for this week. 

According to the report, the following roadways will undergo maintinance or construction projects.

Commuters are advised to drive with caution though these areas, or plan alternative routes. It is also encouraged to allow for extra travel time.

W.H.A.T., Citrus Connection and PCTS Offers  “Free Ride” Friday

Bartow, FL– Winter Haven Area Transit (WHAT), Citrus Connection and Polk County Transit Services (PCTS) will offer its annual Free Ride Friday Nov. 23. 

Free Ride Friday gives riders an opportunity to use the bus system free of charge on Black Friday to conduct Christmas shopping, visit family or just to get to wherever they need to go for any reason. It also provides an opportunity for people who have never tried the public transportation system to try it for free.

Sebring, Florida -- One of the main roads through Sebring now officially honors World War II pilot Major Thomas McGuire, Jr.

McGuire died in a crash while trying to assist another pilot under attack by a Japanese aircraft. He is best known for shooting down 38 Japanese planes in the two years leading up to his death, just short of the U.S. record.

Signs are now up near Kenilworth Boulevard designating the roadway a memorial highway in Major McGuire's honor.

“Walk to School Day” May Slow Traffic

Polk County, FL-- An annual “Walk to School Day” event will take place across Polk County on Wednesday, October 3.  While all schools do not participate, motorists are advised to be alert to the likelihood of more pedestrian traffic and add time to their trips through school zones between 7 and 8 a.m. Traffic may be stopped along some roads to accommodate large groups.

Lake Placid, FL-- Fortunately, no one was injured yesterday when an intoxicated driver crashed into another vehicle on a residential road at around 3:30 in the afternoon.

54-year-old Paul Louis Morgan was heading south on Placid View Dr. when all of the sudden, he reportedly cut into the northbound lane, and almost hit the front end of 27-year-old Nichol Stankeveh's Chevy Tahoe.
