Sebring, Florida -- One of the main roads through Sebring now officially honors World War II pilot Major Thomas McGuire, Jr.

McGuire died in a crash while trying to assist another pilot under attack by a Japanese aircraft. He is best known for shooting down 38 Japanese planes in the two years leading up to his death, just short of the U.S. record.

Signs are now up near Kenilworth Boulevard designating the roadway a memorial highway in Major McGuire's honor.

McGuire, who was from Sebring, was honored by President Truman receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, 3 silver starts along with 15 air medals. The Highlands County Health Department is also named in his honor.
