Sebring, Florida -- In order to celebrate the opening of Downtown Sebring's Centennial Park there will be a tree planting and park dedication ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on April 22. 

The ceremony will be hosted by the Sebring Community Redevelopment Agency.

Volunteers needed at Highlands Hammock State Park

Highlands County, Florida-- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Ridge Rangers Program and Highlands Hammock State Park are looking for volunteers to help restore scrub jay habitat at the park on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. Volunteers can sign up for one or both days.

Highlands County, Florida -- For those who want to learn more about nature, visit the Francis Archbold Huffy Learning Center. 

On Tuesday, April 9, guided tours will gather at the learning center and hike through the scrub landscape on the Discovery Loop, Exlplorer's Loop and Scrub Lookout Loop. 

The tour starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 11:00 a.m. 

The Archbold Biological Station is located at 123 Main Drive, Venus, Florida.

Florida State Parks announces new, free mobile app

Florida-- Trees, lakes, trails, wildlife- they're all things that come to mind when thinking about Florida's parks. Techonology, smartphones and applications, howeverm are probably the last things to come to mind- until now!

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Park Services department has announced the launch of their new, free mobile application, which will serve as an interactive guide for users on the go at any of Florida's 171 parks, trails and historic sites.

No tax increase for SWFWMD

Tampa Bay, Florida -- Although the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) increased its operating budget by $4.5 million for the coming fiscal year, property owners will not pay a higher tax to the state agency responsible for flood control and surface and groundwater quality in the Tampa Bay area.

Tuesday night the Southwest Florida Water Management District Governing Board approved the 2012-13 fiscal year budget and millage (or tax) rate. The fiscal year starts Monday, Oct. 1.

Sebring man cited for damage to state lands

Sebring, Florida-- A Highlands County man was charged with damaging state lands along the northwest shore of Lake Jackson in Sebring by using a tractor to clear and till a quarter-mile-long, 100-yard-wide swath of lake bottom.
