Teen Driver Challenge returns to Highlands Co.

The Highlands County Sheriff's Office is once again offering the Teen Driver Challenge for licensed teen drivers on April 12 and 14.

Utilizing lesson plans developed by the Florida Sheriff's Association, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Department of Transportation, the Teen Driver Program will be administered by specially certified Highlands County Law Enforcement Officers.

Highlands Deputy receives Valor Award pulling two men from house fire

SEBRING, Fla. - A deputy on overnight patrol in the Sebring area of Highlands County is being honored with a Valor Award for his efforts during a house fire in January.

According to reports, Deputy Donivan Cooper was patrolling in the Sebring area around 4 a.m. when he noticed a house fire call on his computer on South Orange Street.

When he arrived, Deputy Cooper found smoke pouring from the residence and was told there were two elderly men, one of them blind, still inside.

Local law enforcement trained to fight agricultural crime

Sebring, Fla. -- The Highlands County Sheriff's Office hosted law enforcement officers across Southwest Florida, for training on how to identify potentially stolen equipment used in farming.

The Florida Agricultural Crimes Intelligence Unit is an origination made up of officers from across the state specializing in agricultural-related crimes and investigations.

As part of the training, law enforcement officers learned to locate serial numbers on heavy machinery. Those numbers are key in identifying stolen property and getting get it returned to its proper owner.

Sebring, Fla. -- The Highlands County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help finding a missing endangered adult, 28-year-old Megan Oliver-Parker.

Parker was last seen leaving her home, at 5321 Riverview Dr. in Sebring, on Feb. 14 in a grey 2002 Ford Mustang with Florida tag 033 HHU. 

The vehicle was found abandoned in the I-75 corridor near Macon, Georgia. According to the sheriff's office, in the past Parker has taken trips to the Nashville, Tennessee area.

The office will be open from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Avon Park, Fla. -- An Avon Park man was arrested Sunday night after a hit and run accident that left a man in serious condition Sunday night.

According to the FHP report, around 11:30 p.m., 32-year-old Brandon Christian was heading driving east on SR 64 near Arbuckle Road in a Toyota Corolla when he hit 63-year-old Gary Dunford while he was walking west along SR64. Deputies say they are not sure if Dunford was walking on the road or along the edge when he was hit.

Hardee County, Fla. -- Inside the small town of Zolfo Springs, from Feb. 29 through March 4 a grand event occurs, the 43rd Annual Pioneer Park Days.

Pioneer Park Days is one of the largest, and is the oldest antique tractor, steam engine and farm equipment shows in the southeast. Some of the highlights include over 400 exhibits of tractors, hit and miss steam engines and farm equipment.
