Lake Placid residents arrested in tax fraud case

Lake Placid, Florida- Last week Special Agents with the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation arrested two Lake Placid residents and a third suspect turned himself in on charges relating to income tax fraud. 

The indictment from the United States Attorney's Office, Middle District of Florida, accuses defendants Desmond Holden, Kinjonah Coston, and Otavis Jones, of participating in a scheme to fraudulently obtain federal income tax refunds by preparing and filing false tax returns.

Elderly woman saved after crashing car into lake

Lake Placid, Florida-- Highlands County Sheriff's Deputies are crediting a Lake Placid man with saving an 89-year-old woman's life after she crashed her car through a fence into a lake along Miller Road Wednesday.

The Sheriff's Office says Anna Vanbeek lost control of her car around 3:15 last Wednesday afternoon and ended up trapped after her car skidded off the roadway and into the lake.

Over 1000 pounds of medication collected by law enforcement

Sebring, Florida-- On Saturday, April 27, 2013, the Sebring and Lake Placid Police Departments and the Highlands County Sheriff's Office participated in Operation Medicine Cabinet.
